A dedicated group of club members came together on April 28 for Hillcrest Country Club’s annual Jewish Federation Day that was co-chaired by Frank Maas and Jerry Coben. After a day that included a golf tournament and brunch on the patio, members gathered for cocktails and hors d’oeuvres and were joined by guest speaker Jim Lehrer, host of The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer on PBS, who met and spoke personally with many club members. During the program, Mr. Lehrer provided a thoughtful presentation discussing many current issues and personal stories that shaped him as a person and journalist. Rabbi Elliot Dorff presented an articulate campaign appeal that focused on the major efforts being undertaken by the Jewish Federation to combat the massive growth of Jewish poverty in Los Angeles. His talk inspired many club members to increase their contributions even during these tough economic times. Overall the event raised a very impressive total of more than $1.1 million for the life-saving programs funded by the Jewish Federation.
